US President Donald Trump has said he hopes to meet with Britain’s King Charles III in September. On April 18 (Friday), the British media outlet BBC reported that preparations are being made for his second state visit from Buckingham Palace. This visit has the potential to further strengthen the traditional diplomatic relationship between the UK and the US.
“I’ve been invited by King and Country — it’s a tremendous honor,” Trump said at a White House press conference, according to the BBC. He said a possible date for September was being set. This will be his second state visit, a rare occurrence for an American president. Receiving a personal invitation from the royal family is a politically significant message, especially in the context of transatlantic relations.
The invitation was presented to Trump on behalf of King Charles during British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s visit to Washington in February 2024. Although the exact dates of the visit have not yet been announced, Dumfries House or Balmoral in Scotland are being considered as possible locations. The place holds special significance for Trump, as it is the birthplace of his mother, Scotland. He also announced the opening of a new golf course there this year.
Trump made his first state visit to the UK in 2019, at the invitation of Queen Elizabeth II. A US president is not usually invited to a state visit a second time. But Trump is an exception—King Charles has invited him back and plans are underway to welcome him to Windsor Castle.
This potential visit will not only reestablish diplomatic ties, but also bring to the fore the family and personal ties between the two countries. This closeness between King Charles and Trump carries new political messages that could influence the future course of UK-US relations. If this visit is finalized in September, it will be a historic and diplomatic celebration, which could also become a new ray of hope for the people of both countries.
