Former advisor and National Citizens Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam said in a recent interview, “Many advisors are thinking of leaving the country safely“. His statement quickly went viral on social media and sparked a range of reactions. Many have raised questions, so who are those advisors, and did he tell the truth?

Nahid Islam’s statement has sparked a new discussion in politics and created a stir on social media. Although such direct criticism from a former information advisor is controversial in society and political circles, many believe it conveys a responsible view of history.

Videos and photocards of Nahid Islam’s speech have been posted on various Facebook pages and accounts. These posts have seen mixed reactions for and against. The photocard posted on Ekattor Television’s verified Facebook page on Saturday evening, As of 9pm on Sunday, 12,000 users have responded and 1,400 comments have been made.

During the July mass uprising, Nahid Islam, the coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement at the time, announced a point of collapse for the Awami League government. When the interim government was formed after the coup, he became an advisor as a student representative. He became an advisor to the Ministry of Information. Nahid resigned from the government last February and took over as the NCP convener. However, Mahfuz Alam and Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, who joined the government as student representatives, remain as advisors.

In an interview with television channel Ekattor, former information advisor Nahid Islam said, “None of them wanted to become advisors to the government. They called for the formation of a national government. If that were the case, the students would not have had to take responsibility. If the government did not have the political power or the power to overthrow, the interim government would not have lasted even three months. In the first six months, various attempts to overthrow the government or to carry out counter-revolution were ongoing. This still happens occasionally.”

Nahid Islam said, “We were definitely wrong to trust many of the political party leaders and those who became advisors.” We should have strengthened the student leadership, and if we went to government, we should have gone together. The trust we had placed in civil society or political parties, we were betrayed. Many advisors have arranged their own sugarcane or have cheated with the mass uprising. When the time comes, we will also reveal their names.

In the interview, Nahid Islam also said, “Many of the advisors have established liaisons with various political parties.” They are thinking about their safe exit. This is something we are suffering from and will continue to suffer from. But if they believed that their employers were the forces of the mass uprising, the ordinary people who took to the streets and gave their lives and were injured, and if they trusted them, then this deviation of the advisors would not have happened.
