If you want to travel to Sri Lanka, you will now need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online in advance. The country’s Immigration and Visa Department has announced that under the new rules of 2025, there will no longer be an opportunity to obtain an ETA at the airport. As a result, entry may be complicated if permission is not obtained online before travel.
Earlier, it was possible to get an ETA at the airport upon arrival in Sri Lanka, but this has now been abolished. From now on, all tourists, business travelers and transit passengers will have to get an ETA online before traveling. This rule has come into effect from September 2025.
An ETA is a pre-authorization for entry into Sri Lanka, which acts as an alternative to a visa. It is usually valid for 30 days and can be used for tourism, business or transit purposes. By applying and receiving an ETA online, passengers can reduce time and hassle at the airport.
To apply for an ETA, you need to visit the official ETA portal of the Sri Lankan government. Applicants need to submit their passport, travel details, email address and the prescribed fee through online payment. The application process is usually completed within 24-72 hours.
The Sri Lankan government has said that anyone trying to enter without an online ETA may be sent back. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure that they receive an ETA before traveling. This rule is especially strict for citizens of South Asian countries including Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan.
The government hopes the new rules will make the arrival of tourists to Sri Lanka more orderly and safe, while also making the immigration process easier and more digital.
This change is an important message for travelers. If you want to travel to Sri Lanka, you need to get an ETA online now, otherwise your journey may be disrupted.
